“Hakuba-kun! I am so sorry for what I have done! Ai-chan told me that people would die if I told anyone about the rifle. I just wish there was a machine that could make me forget I discovered the rifle! I am just very sorry! Please forgive me!” Kita cried as she fell to her knees and lowered her head so Hakuba wouldn’t see her cry.

“This is all well and good, Yamashita-chan, but you should be apologizing to Subaru-san, not me. He is the one who has had to deal with the stress of this entire situation which should not have happened in the first place. I suggest that you go straight away to make amends and promise to stay out of his personal business.”

“…Also, there’s no need to cry. Come now, be a professional. As long as you’re reasonable I’m certain that something can be worked out. Just… be much more careful in the future, all right?”

“Well, she is keeping all notes on her cases in a little notebook now. She has learned a lot from her mistakes. Maybe if you give her a chance and she will mature in the detective field, Hakuba-kun! I’m sure you have screwed up big time once when you were starting out as a detective. I will tell her what could happen if she leaks out the info and then she will come to you for forgiveness.

“Well, she did discover the rifle when she was just starting out as a detective and I guess she was acting like the detectives she sees on the crime dramas.”

“I will tell her not to worry. She has improved a lot as a detective, though. She has solved 20 cases so far. I just hope you can forgive her. She would be very upset if she knew you were angry at her.”

"Perhaps she should know that I’m angry. She needs to understand now, before anything else, that we are not detectives to solve crimes for the crime’s sake. The law does not exist to, nor does it benefit from, righting every wrong. The law is there to protect and serve people. Detectives are to solve cases to help people.

"If a detective- and by extension, the law- acts in a manner that endangers or compromises a person (physically, emotionally, financially, etc), it nullifies the original intent and thus loses its authority. We must always be diligent in our conduct to ensure that we are assisting with preventing and/or solving crimes instead of creating more…

“As well we should! A crumpet and an english muffin are two entirely different things. Suggesting otherwise would be akin to saying that french toast were synonymous with bagel. Preposterous!”

“English Muffins are dry, and wonderful for a variety of toppings, from sweet to savory. You Americans are likely most familiar with them from fast food breakfast sandwiches, such as the McDonanld’s Egg McMuffin. Ugh.”

Crumpets

“Crumpets, on the other hand, are wonderfully moist and eggy. I prefer them with butter and a bit of honey, though many of my mates back home love lemon curd or various jellies.

"Most of my friends in the states have confessed that they’ve never seen them in stores. Unfortunate, as they’re absolutely lovely. I suggest that you find an import store straight away if you have not had the pleasure of enjoying one before.”

“Hello Hakuba-san! Could you tell Subaru-san not to kill Kita-san if she leaks out the info about her discovery of the rifle? He is your senpai after all. I tried talking to him, but he told me that if she gets killed, he will take vengeance. I just don’t want you to be the one to investigate her murder.”

“Client, actually, but that’s neither here nor there at this point. Haibara-chan, this is a very serious problem. He has the rifle under my authorization, and it is for his own personal protection and nothing else. This shouldn’t even be an issue. In fact, Yamashita-chan’s tampering with his personal property is a much more disturbing crime than his possession of the weapon in question. Her divulging this sensitive information to you only exacerbates the problem further.

"Please let her know that she has nothing to worry about regarding the weapon, unless she chooses to endanger his life by spreading this sensitive information around. Frankly, I’m surprised and disappointed in her conduct as a detective. Information is our trade; the fact that she is dispersing it so freely without regard to the people that it effects is… grossly inappropriate at best."
