Goodbye

“God damn you can’t even answer your phone, Hattori?!" Hakuba’s voice, clearly frustrated, strained. “What would you like me to do now?

Silence on the line, aside from the detective’s breathing, before he was answered with a gruff and muffled male voice.

“Proceed.”

"Ha… certainly.” Bitter, hard. Angry. “Hattori, I’m to tell you to pass a message along to my dear daddy and the rest of the boys on the for- ah, fine, FINE, stop-”

Muffled clatter. A ragged, broken gasp from the detective.

Silence. One… two…. three…

“Hattori.” Quieter, calmer. Broken. “The Superintendent General needs to know that if he wants to see me again that he’s to wait next to Hachikō…” He coughed, then released a shuddering breath. And then, in English, quickly. “Don’t let him leave the house. They’re going to intercept at- ahgh!”

The definitive sound of gunfire. Four shots in total. More muffled, shifting sounds. The thud of something heavy hitting the ground.

"Tomorrow evening…” The previous male voice said into the phone. “Seven o’clock sharp. If he wants the body in one piece.”
