A Sweet Nothing for Emi-kun

[sms] I’m just bullying you, don’t worry— Ah, that’d be a great project, if you could manage it! It’s certainly a more reasonable word count than some other writing events I’ve seen. Only if you’re certain you have that time, I’d wholly encourage the idea.

[sms] Gimme gimme. Whatever little plotty bits you’ve conjured up, I wan’em.

[Text] Well… it involves a detective.

[Text] A female detective.

[Text] And a serial killer. It takes place in America. Do you think that’s too ambitious? I’ve only been there a handful of times. I may have to get your help on some of the finer details.

[sms] Not that editorials are supposed to be knocked, of course? Hh-hmm. I’m glad that you’re at least enjoying it in some respect.

[sms] AND IF ANYTHING THAT JUST MAKES ME INCREDIBLY EXCITED

[sms] You’d better not be joking because I’m going to hold you to this most absolutely! Have you seriously been considering it! Oh Hakuba that’d be wonderful!

[Text] Of course not. Editorials are wonderful and should be respected and enjoyed by all. But – yes. I looked through that NaNoWriMo website and think, if my caseload isn’t too heavy, that I might like to participate. A novel in one month. The word count seems manageable…?

[Text] I’ll confess that I may have ideas for it already. I /may/ have started an outline. Perhaps.

((Apparently, her reply kept getting eaten or sent private, so here it is, screencapped and glowing for posterity and your enjoyment.))

[Text] I suppose we’ll see. I’m so used to writing editorials and reports, so I’m still not entirely sure what to do with fiction. But it has been… interesting thus far. You may change your mind when you hear that I’ve been considering writing…

[Text] …a novel.

Rain, Rain, Go Away

Her somewhat superior hearing made it somewhat easier to hear what that other person in the car was saying. A male, not a native of Japan, from what she could infer from the slight accent in his words. Not that it mattered, she was somewhat surprised anyone would care about her situation as the humans certainly wasn’t well-known for their kindness.

She pulled on what she hoped was a somewhat sheepish smile despite the feeling of wanting to be left alone. If the person really wouldn’t mind it, she really would definitely be more than happy to take that offer up if it meant she could get home faster and be away from the humans faster.

Perhaps she should have reconsidered that train of thought, it wasn’t the most ‘human’ thing to do. Humans didn’t usually trust their own fellow humans, after all. Though she personally didn’t have many worries as she still could burn the stranger to a crisp if they tried anything.

“I would truly appreciate it, though I don’t think I can get in and not get everything wet. I would feel bad if I do so.”

“Oh, not to worry, please, miss!” Hakuba called to her. “It’s no trouble at all, come on in out of the rain before you catch your death out there!”

Although an awkward maneuver, the detective leaned further still and unlatched the door, pushing it open a ways for invitation. Sure, he might have to get the interior of the car detailed, but it was definitely worth the trouble if he could help someone out. Especially as the Japanese seemed to have a very particular aversion to walking in the rain – something that he did in London daily.

Yes, hello Hakuba-san – it’s a pleasure to see you again. I’ve been fine, in the sense of… there is nothing particularly terrible happening in my life.

*If the occasional night terrors about being executed, and getting stressed out over a skeleton equaled fine. Kyouko didn’t feel fine (the directional possibilities of this case didn’t help to ease her either), but there was no point in talking about it. So she would just keep to simple phrases and a calm face, and give just enough to keep the conversation and curious questions away from herself. Nothing she couldn’t handle.*

Don’t worry about any compensation. Being out and mobile is enough for me – I believe I’ve been getting a bit lazy as of late… Anyways, how about you – how have you been?

“That’s somewhat dour, isn’t it? Hm.  I’ve been well enough, myself,” Hakuba lied, thoughts ranging in a similar circle- though, sans the skeleton and all- regarding his own situation. “Just very busy. As for compensation, I’m going to insist that I pay your invoice but we can discuss that after the case if you like."

With the supplies safely stowed, Hakuba shut the trunk and moved to open the passenger side door. "If you’re ready, we can leave straight away. I’ve actually managed to make an appointment with my contact, so the sooner we leave, the better."

He then hesitated. "Ah, and, Kirigiri-san, do you know how to use a firearm?"

Six more have entered the bakery.

She shrugged, cleaning her hands with a damp cloth she’d soaked and wrung out in the sink around the corner. “It’s a good school. You’re practically guaranteed success, although..” She swept a hand towards him, gesturing at the aura of success he radiated. “I don’t think you have any worries about that.”

At his admission that he’d be leaving soon, Karin felt a hint of disappointment. She’d hoped they could be good friends, and if they did end up growing closer she’d miss him terribly when he went. Not that she pitied him that plane ride. Yeesh.

As she was shuddering at the mere though, her detective friend had picked out a seat to sit in and was ready to, when he offered to share his time with her a bit more.

“Oh…if it’s quite alright with you, I’d love to.”

The praise did not go unnoticed; Hakuba looked quite pleased as Karin spoke, inclining his head toward her with that same, confident smile. Things were developing well, which was good. Yes, there was the case that still needed to be taken care of, but the detective was always in need of good company.

“Oh, yes, please do. I’d love to get to know you better, particularly if your eclairs are as good as they look. You’ll have me as a regular customer, and I should very much like for you to like me!”

Since she was joining him, Hakuba pulled out a seat for her first. He waited for her to take it, pushing it in after before sitting across from her.

“I’m… keen on learning more about Hope’s Peak. A baker… The only other student that I know from the institution is a detective. It must be quite diverse there.”
