“…He doesn’t follow that old Holmes adage?” Kaito was trying not to laugh. After all, even though it was improbable, observant people could figure it out. It was just a matter of getting solid evidence to convict him, which he wouldn’t allow if he could help it. And that was a bit of an asinine move on his part, all in all, after just denying he was KID.

“Well, that depends. It wouldn’t be Nakamori that I’d be worried about. But I appreciate your help, nonetheless. Don’t go getting hurt for my sake, though.” It wasn’t like Kaito could get hurt now very easily, so the more worrisome concern was the flock of crows deciding to hurt the bystanders, if they arrived.

“But I’m surprised. Secretly a KID fan?” He let out a chuckle. “I guess that’s a recurring thing, where even the cops usually like him. Go ahead and tell him some hints.”

“I’ll make sure that he’s properly briefed, and really, I don’t think there’s any cause for worry. The most dangerous part about these charity benefits is how dreadfully boring they are. Trust me. It’s nothing but a bunch of rich men and women dressed up as nicely as they can to show their equally rich friends just how much they belong…"

Hakuba shook his head, unable to resist rolling his eyes. Despite the fact that he is, indeed, one of those types himself.

"You’ll be just fine. The law enforcement members that are likely to come are all paper pushers, anyway… bureaucrat-types, making important decisions and speeches. Not easily startled or violent.”

“I never knew that. But will it give him anxiety, if he thinks KID has decided to show up? I don’t want to give the guy a heart attack.“ There was some irony to all of this, a sticky web of lies and conflicting interests all centered around the existence of Kaitou KID. And the elephant in the room was bugging him.

“But I wonder… You and I have these banters, where you accuse me of being KID and I deny it. Did you ever tell him about your suspicions? Maybe he’ll leave some priceless gem out, thinking I’d try stealing it, if you did tell him.” His tone was light and joking, but he would behave himself if that were the case. Mostly.

He shifted his head just a bit and stretched his legs. “That’d be pretty low, stealing from a charity event, even if I were KID.”

image

“He’d heard that I had pestered you about it… and told me to ‘leave that poor boy alone,’ but I have not discussed any evidence with him. He and I do not go over my cases, typically… the superintendent general does not have time for things like that.” Hakuba shrugged dismissively, looking once again to the floor – and his bare feet sticking out from the blanket. Hm. Not very proper, that. He pulled them back, straightening up on the couch next to Kaito.

“If you’re concerned, I can give him a vague idea of your plan ahead of time. Or, you can discuss it with him yourself… I’m sure he’ll love it, regardless. Honestly, I think he might secretly be a KID fan, himself… and I would be surprised if Nakamori-keibu were to attend… so you should be safe."

A brief pause.

"I’ll watch out for you.”

“…During the beginning of the show, I was thinking of showing up dressed like Kaitou KID and making it look like the event got crashed, while still doing a trick or two, then revealing it was me instead,” Just hoping that someone other than Hakuba’s dad didn’t try anything.

The arm around him surprised him slightly. Hakuba didn’t really strike him as a touchy type, but it was possible he was mistaken. (He wasn’t a detective, after all.) The thunder boomed outside once more and he saw a fuzzy blur run out from under the couch and ran in the direction of his room. “Are you coming to the event?”

Hakuba wasn’t a touchy person, at least not with people that he knew personally. Truthfully, he wasn’t sure how he felt about having his arm around Kaito, but he left it there and tried to stay calm and casual. The comment on KID earned an amused chuckle, and Hakuba relaxed a little more.

“I don’t think they’ll be expecting that… Should go over quite well. And, yes, I’ll be there.”  Hakuba turned his head to look at Kaito, tilting his chin downward some to see him better. “Even if I weren’t forced to go to all of these events, there’s no way I would miss it. Your performance aside, my father doesn’t take responsibility for these often… that’s my mother’s realm, and she’s threatened to fly out to see how he does for herself. He’s all nerves and anxiety."

He laughed again, then looked up to the ceiling, stretching his legs out in front of him.

"Papa was such a fan of your father. He’ll be thrilled to hear that you’ve agreed to it."

“Glad to hear it,” Kaito said with a wink. He settled back into his position, head resting on Hakuba’s shoulder. “Guests should be made comfortable, after all.”

Still, back of his mind, he thought of the time. Sunset would be at about seven. He nuzzled Hakuba just a bit, trying to get a bit more comfortable himself.

“Mm.”

Ah, the nuzzling. Hakuba shivered, and considered the practical merits of potentially cuddling back at Kaito. He was more likely to raise his core temperature that way, certainly, and there was no doubt that he would enjoy it. The problem was that Kaito was not one of his conquests, so the detective had all of the want, but none of the skill accessible that he’d need to really be suave.

But that’s not what it was about anyway, was it? Kaito was being friendly, and a good host. And perhaps there was more between them than awkward acquaintanceship/rivalry.

Rosy cheeked and face looking like a dog getting into something it knows it shouldn’t, Hakuba shifted some to sneak his arm around Kaito’s back and shoulders. For warmth.

“So… ah, what do you have in mind for your performance at the charity event? You had quite the scheming face earlier…”

Have Some Candy!

ask-marley-mays:

“You ARE very WELCOME! Baa!” She said with the smile as she stared at the teenage human while she gave some of her candy to him, “♈ never MET a SMART, FR♈ENDLY, and VERY loyal DETECT♈VE l♈ke YOU ♈n MY l♈fe. But ♈ d♈ed TO meet ONE for YEARS.”

And she began to wonder what Zodiac sign he is. Mentioning his personality and yes, great skills he has, he might be a Aries like her. Or maybe a Scorpio or Capricorn. She knows that feminine signs are the signs that are considered to be strong through thought for a astrologist and also a unpopular detective. She’s been reading tons of astrology books since she was small. She had been always tried to gather more information and add new Zodiacs with new names.

She remembered making up three by the name Aruquois, the fourteenth sign that resembles “The Cat”, Tersoinak, the fifteenth and “The Blind Prince”, and Relafine, the sixteenth and “The Two Headed Mouse”. But the thing was she had no idea where her signs must be in. So she gave up on them since.

She wanted to ask him tons of questions… But she was very scared at the same time… On the other side of her, she wondered if he will end up killing her. Will he hurt her? What will he do to her? In the human world, all she knows is that horses are also the main targets of hunters for lunch, dinner, and, to make things worse, also used as decorations… She was very frightened.

“…♈ hate THE reasons WHY ♈’m HATED…” She accidentally said, “Nobody L♈KES me…”

“I wouldn’t worry too much about that. Who could hate a little goat like you? After all, you have candy.. and you can talk. I suppose there might be a little concern about offering candy to complete strangers, but who can resist a talking goat creature?”

Epilogue: Fancy Feline Hour -2/4

Confusion and pain were the two words Hakuba put together as he returned to consciousness. The third was ‘annoying,’ which was in reference to his the ringtone assigned to Baaya in his phone. He lifted his head, scraping his cheek against the bark of the tree that he was in, and frowned.

It was dark. And he was naked. In a tree.

The detective very carefully pulled himself into a sit, feet bracing him against the sturdy branch beneath him. Memories shaken, the only thing he could think of to do was to answer the phone, which he did.

“Ah, mo-”

“Saguru-kun! Where in blue blazes are you?! We’ve been trying to call you for the last three hours!”

Hakuba grimaced, pulling the phone away from his ear. “Ah, Baaya… what time is it?”

“WELL PAST TIME TO GET YOUR FANNY BACK HERE! Your father is about to send out a search and rescue squad!”

Oh. Right. The missed dinner appointment… not answering his phone… Things completely unlike his usual behavior. But then, he’d just been a cat, so that was to be expected. And on that note, the tie around his neck was rather uncomfortably tight.

“I’ll be home soon, Baaya… I just need to figure out how to… get out of this tree…”

“Tree?”

“Yeah, I fell asleep in it earlier. That’s why I missed your calls.”

“Just… climb down and get home, okay, young master?”

“It’s a little more complicated than that, Baaya…"

"What?” The concerned tone went flat again. “What do you mean?”

“Ah, well, you see…”

“I don’t like that tone you’re using, young master…”

“I may have fallen asleep naked?”

“What…?”

“In a tree.”

“Right, I understood that part, young master.”

“Right outside of the court house."

There was silence for a moment. Then a sigh. "I’ll bring a car and a change of clothes…”

“Oh, no need for that. I can see them from here; they’re underneath the bench just south from the tree.”

More silence.

“I put them there for safe keeping.”

“…Your mother may be fine with these new age protests, but your father and I do not share the same opinion, Saguru-kun! Honestly, what were you thinking?!”

“That I was very tired, to be quite honest.”

“…Never mind. I’ll be there in fifteen. Don’t… move or you’ll risk being caught and…”

“I wouldn’t dream of such a thing, Baaya.” Pause. “Oh, and Baaya… about Papa…”

“If you manage to avoid being charged with public indecency, I will spare him the information.”

“You’re wonderful, Baaya… have I told you that recently?”

“Yes, which is what worries me. I’ll see you soon.”

Hakuba waited for the woman to disconnect before he did the same, and finished pulling the tie off from around his neck. There didn’t seem to be many out and about at this time of night, which was lucky for him  As long as no one had seen him and had taken photos stealthily, he ought to be just fine… Maybe…

Hm. The tie that he’d stolen, he discovered, was actually quite nice. He’d have to stop by some time soon to offer patronage.

Fancy Feline Hour 04/04

A short while later, the cat that Hakuba had turned into began to feel very, very worn out. After all, the past three hours had been full of adventures. Walking, running, chasing, climbing, catching, murdering, more walking, stealing, and forcing paws to do things that they were not technically supposed to be able to do.

Something about all of this, and the whole superiority complex that had been accentuated in the transformation, had his body moving into a curled up position by itself.

But, no! He had an hour left of the cursed M!A, and he was already an hour late to dinner with his father. No eclairs, no books, and no tea. Heatbreaking, really. Which made him feel even more exhausted.

Would tea even taste good… to a cat?

The thought forced him to his paws, and he walked back to the courthouse proper, dug out his phone from the pile of clothes, and inspected the time because he couldn’t get his pocket watch to open. Yes, fifty two minutes precisely until the transformation would be over. It would be easy to take a twenty minute catnap for optimum efficiency, drag the clothing to a more private location, and then get dressed without any drama. Then, he could call his father, apologize, and reschedule. Simple.

He picked the phone up in his mouth and carried it with him to the nearest tree, scaling it somewhat awkwardly from the bulk in his jaws. But once he was settled in the broad crook of a network of branches, he was able to grasp the device in his paws and set an alarm.

Then, before he quite finished saving the new settings, he fell into a deep, blissful sleep.

Fancy Feline Hour 03/04

After the sparrow incident, Hakuba took great care in grooming himself and then walked back toward the court house. He was shaken, and frightfully aware of how the humans he passed looked at him. They knew that he was guilty. Didn’t have a collar, no tag or license, had killed a harmless little bird in the park – where children were present, no less! It was a dark, dark day for Hakubby.

Just as he was beginning to feel new levels of pity for himself, he found himself in front of a suit shop. Hm. He sat in front of it, head tilting first one way, then the other. Ears perking, the cat managed a smile.

Ah! So that’s what was missing! A TIE.

In an effort to feel more human and subsequently like himself (??), Hakuba strolled into the shop and nodded to the attendant on his way to the rack with all of the ties, tail lazily flicking back and forth as he made his selection.

The shopkeeper stared in amazement, unsure of how to handle the situation, and only got out from behind the counter as the Hakuba cat made his way to the front with the tie clenched gently in its teeth.

“You… have to pay for that…”  the shopkeeper offered lamely, frowning as the cat ignored him and walked right out the door again.

Fifteen or so minutes later, Hakuba sat on another bench near the courthouse, pleased at his quick and clever work of figuring out how to get it on and tied in a passable Windsor knot. His father would have complained, but he was a cat, for god’s sake. And- he realized then – he’d just committed yet another crime.

Somehow, he couldn’t bring himself to care.

Thunder

phantom-thief-kid:

Kaito noted the slight silver necklace, but just put it in the back of his mind. As much as Hakuba tried to hide it, Kaito was used to sleight of hand.

Why Hakuba was doing so being the foremost question Kaito had, but the awkwardness made him hold his tongue. Another sign, he noted wearily, that his KID persona was really starting to change him. He would have asked a lot of questions if this were to have happened much earlier. (…Though this probably wouldn’t have happened in the first place at that point in time.)

As Hakuba got the other shirt, Kaito unfolded the blanket and draped it over their laps. “Warmer?”

When all of the changing nonsense was done, and Hakuba had put his shirt over the arm of the couch, he nodded. “Yes. I think so."

Part of that was the heated embarrassment that had reached his ears. Another was still being so close to Kaito. But the warm, dry shirt had actually helped considerably, though it did fit a bit snugly, as he’d expected.

But, the worst was over, and it was time to relax. He turned his head to look at Kaito, offering a somewhat sheepish, hesitant smile. "Thank you, Kuroba-kun. I think this will do quite nicely.”
