“Sound’s great,” Kazuha began before shutting her eyes and holding up her pointer finger. “Just let me go grab my purse!” Kazuha yelled instantaneously spinning around and running into her home.

Kazuha was in such a hurry she’d forgotten to close the door on her way in. However, it only took her a minute or two to reappear in front of Hakuba – she was panting softly and smiling broadly, her purse swung over her shoulder as she brushed off her clothes and fixed anything that may have been amiss.

“So ya say they have cute stuff? It’s been a’while since I gotta new phone. I half’ta say. I’m excited!” Kazuha said – stepping beside him when she felt she’d looked well enough to begin walking.

“Ah… ‘cute’ is rather objective, so I suppose you will have to judge that for yourself… but I do believe that there will be something there for you."

Hakuba wondered, briefly, if this was such a good idea. Helping a lady with a task like this was noble enough, certainly, and he did suppose that it was more or less his own fault. But Kazuha, she was… well, almost as spirited as Hattori. How was that even possible?

Would this end up being Hakuba’s undoing?

Biting his lip, the detective extended his arm for her to take hold of, to walk with her.

Subaru nodded and pulled out his newly-found phone. Here was to hoping Masumi didn’t get herself involved in another case during teatime. Luckily not. (It seemed lately that she was feeling more unsteady in her deductions and he was worried about the reason why. Usually she was much sharper and more reliable than this.)

“Yes, we could.” And he sincerely hoped Hakuba would call him if he were in danger.

With how few contacts Hakuba actually had in Japan that weren’t just friends of his father, he just might. The detective read his own number out to Okiya while making an entry for his newfound friend.

“Ah, and could I have your email address, as well? I like to have as much information for my contacts as possible.”

…Okay, so Hakuba did pick up on the admission. No point in trying to take it back. He would latch onto this one slip-up and not let it go.

“You really have no idea what is going on, do you?” Kaito grinned. Oh, dear, he knew something Hakuba didn’t. And about a great detective, no less. The irony made him ecstatic.

He is much more one of secrets and lies than even I. Let’s just say that he has two faces as well and he and you are on equal ground for a reason. He is not nearly a prodigy as he first appears, when you understand what happened to him in the first place.”

That…

Hakuba frowned, brows furrowing faintly at the thief’s sinister words. It didn’t feel right. Nothing about that settled well at all with the detective. Too many questions sprung up all at once, each with their own, different set of implications.

“What… are you talking about?” he asked, voice tense, serious. “What do you mean, ‘what happened to him?’”

He felt territorial. Protective. And his fists clenched at his sides in response.

“I’ll warn you once that I will not tolerate idle threats against little Edogawa-kun, regardless of your working relationship.”

She’ll understand one day

It’s true, ladies… the rumors are true. I did, indeed, get a haircut this afternoon. Fortunately, it was just a trim and it’s likely that most of you won’t even notice a difference. Never fear: I understand that my hair is one of the things that makes me so exotic, unique, and desirable.

Another quality are the parallels between myself and James Bond (especially as played by Sean Connery).

I brought this up with Baaya on the drive home and she gave me the most odd look.

“You? James Bond? I suppose I can suspend my disbelief to correlate his name to yours with enough effort…”

“Please, you know I’m more of an international spy than a regular old detective.”

“Young Master…”

And then she laughed.  And continued to do for the next four and a quarter minutes. I waited until she was finished, but the moment she looked back at me, the laughter returned.

Baaya is known to be a critic, however, so I suppose I should not be surprised. It does not change the facts.

As Kazuha seen Hakuba approaching her she crossed her arms over  her chest tightly and began to mumble furiously under her breath.  “Wha’d ya want?" Kazuha’s demeanor, however, changed entirely upon hearing his proposition.

"U-Uh, thanks Hakuba-kun" Kazuha said softly uncrossing her arms and  staring directly at him – trying to figure out just what he was up to. "I-I,  uh.." Kazuha was hesitant in her answer, she hadn’t known Hakuba’s full  intentions and knew of his rivalry with Heiji. She contemplated it for  a moment and figured being with Hakuba-kun was better than spending  the day alone.

"I guess I’d have ta go with a flip" Kazuha finally spit out – admitting  defeat against the ridiculous spell and taking Hakuba-kun’s offer as a  kind gesture instead of a malicious intent. Though it hadn’t meant she’d  fully trusted him and would definitely be mindful of what she’d said  around him.

"I don’t really know much ’bout phones in general which is why I usually  take Heiji, he’s better at figuring that sorta thin’ out. I just go fer what’s  cute!" Kazuha replied earnestly laughing lightly as she gripped the base  of her pony tail with both hands and tugged at it – making it firm and  bouncy. "I have 19636.72 yen ta spend!"

Well, at least she was enthusiastic. No wonder Hattori-san liked her. Hakuba smiled, faintly pained, mostly patient, and nodded to her responses.

"A flip phone should be rather easy to procure within that price range, especially one with the styling as you’ve mentioned. Many are made with the female shopper in mind, and can be found in a variety of designs to please any pallet. That said, I suggest that we go straight way to the mall to begin our search.”

Hakuba considered the pricing, and began to formulate a mental list of all of the features the latest flip phones had. What would a girl like Toyama-chan need that she might not think of herself? Hm.

“That sounds like a pleasant idea. Yes, I am interested.” Subaru, meanwhile, was contemplating just how to get this kid to avoid getting himself killed, because it was very likely he’d end up snooping around where he shouldn’t.

(If Hakuba were cautious, maybe he wouldn’t have to intervene, but Hakuba didn’t really sound like he was, given the way he was talking earlier. Subaru also made a note to look up the cases this one was involved in.)

Just because Hakuba outright said that you should ignore danger to have fun doesn’t make him irresponsible and reckless, does it? Oh, wait.

Hakuba nodded with enthusiasm at the willingness of his newly found tea companion. “Excellent! I really ought to head out now, however… I need to track down a book store before closing time. Ah- could we exchange mobile numbers, perhaps?”

The teenager pulled out his phone and brought up a list of contacts. At least he wasn’t one to just hand his phone over.

“I was taking a page out of your book and trying to use process of elimination. But I understand and thank you for that.” And now he’d basically dropped the pretense of denying being KID. Shit.

“Also, if that’s your goal, you may wish to be just a bit wary of that Edogawa kid. He’s… ruthless, in a way. He, uh, used KID as live bait for ruthless murderers, among other things. I don’t know what that Mouri guy is teaching him, but he’s clearly learning a few bad lessons…”

To save pride for them both, and to avoid getting too many personal feelings involved, Hakuba only gave a nod in regard to the long-awaited admission. On the subject of Conan, however, he raised a brow, frowning.

“Don’t be so easily fooled… if Edogawa-kun is learning anything from that lousy excuse for a PI, it’s what not to do. That boy has the makings of being the most talented detective anyone’s ever before seen… And that unwavering dedication to justice is what will make him a far better detective than I ever will be. So yes, do be wary. He won’t prove to be a Javert or Lestrade… He’ll be a veritable Sherlock. By the time he’s our age, he’ll be making Kudou-san and I look like foolish children."

kazuha–toyama:

“OI!” Kazuha shouted ”My phone! I was suppose ta get a new one with Heiji ta’day…” Kazuha said hanging her head low – before giving it some thought. ”That’s it! Your going to pay Hakuba-kun!” Kazuha yelled shaking her fist angrily – she hadn’t thought the spell to really be all that strong… She was wrong….

“Ah, well I could assist you in finding and purchasing a new phone, then, Toyama-san… I do know a thing or two about how to get the best mobile for the money."

Hakuba smiled pleasantly, partly at the idea of spending the day with a lovely young lady of spirit (hoping that he wouldn’t regret it), and partly because it was sure to upset Hattori-san in the process. While being harmless, of course.

"What style of phone are you in the market for? Flip phone? ‘Candy bar’ style? Perhaps a smart phone? Do you know what applications you’d like? What your requirements are?” The detective looked thoughtful for a moment. “And what, exactly, is your budget, my dear? I’m afraid that I’m not all that familiar with your finances."

okiya-subaru:

“Good luck on your path. Graduate studies may be difficult, but it is rewarding if you enjoy your field.”

…Wait, wasn’t he the one that offered the tea after seeing that Subaru was upset? “It’s not a problem.”

“Thank you. Good luck to you, as well."

Yes, it was Hakuba who offered. And perhaps Hakuba that received the most benefit. Oops.

The young detective wondered what would become of this meeting. Okiya was pleasant; much more so than most of the people he’d come to know in Tokyo, sadly enough. And he was interesting. There was something about him that Hakuba couldn’t quite place that intrigued him… Made him need to know more.

"Would you be interested in meeting for tea again next week? Same time, same place?”

It was worth a shot.
