It was resting on the back of Limerick\u2019s shoulders. \u201cWhat, this?\u201d<br \/>His yellow eyes narrowed to thin lines of gold in a sea of black. \u201cWhat do you think?\u201d<br \/>I petted him again, fingers dipping into the thick fur between his shoulder blades. \u201cCats usually like being petted, don\u2019t they?\u201d <br \/>\u201cYou have no idea about cats, do you?\u201d<br \/>I actually didn\u2019t know, since Mom never let me have a pet before, but shrugged. \u201cYou\u2019re purring, anyway.\u201d<br \/>He blinked, eyes going from gibbous to full moon in surprise. \u201cI \u2013 what?\u201d And then he stopped to listen to himself, and there it was: a deep, rumbling purr in his chest. Limerick\u2019s eyes went half-moon and glared up at me. \u201cStop. Stop this at once.\u201d<br \/>\u201cYou like it!\u201d I stroked down the line of his spine. \u201cDoesn\u2019t your master ever pet you?\u201d<br \/>\u201cNo, of course not. Have a sense of propriety; I\u2019m a Familiar, not a normal house cat!\u201d<br \/>\u201cSorry,\u201d I said, but kept petting anyway. He didn\u2019t move. <br \/>Soon, he settled into a loaf next to my leg, eyes completely closed. <br \/>\u201cYou\u2019re a terrible person, Salmon Coal,\u201d Limerick said. <br \/>\u201cYeah, I\u2019m the worst.\u201d I moved up to scratching behind his ears, then down to his neck, rubbing the loose skin over muscle. <br \/>\u201cAh, yes, scratch right at my neck there \u2013 thank you.\u201d<br \/>\u201cYou\u2019re welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is a reminder that I have a writing blog &ndash; <a class=\"tumblelog\" href=\"http:\/\/tmblr.co\/mgIajXWT_wLZUTNWducZW1g\">gabapplewrites<\/a> &ndash; and occasionally post bits of prose on my current novel\u2019s tumblr account, <a class=\"tumblelog\" href=\"http:\/\/tmblr.co\/mwf8refx3EFRWQtbndqa13Q\">salmoncoal<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>salmoncoal: I wanted to share what I wrote for this morning\u2019s word war (I won, btw): Limerick gave me a pointed look.
