Excited.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What can you guys tell me about <i>San Diego?<\/i>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>OH, you asked for it. SAN DIEGO = my dad\u2019s childhood home and the only big city I would ever consider living in, if it weren\u2019t so expensive. It\u2019s California\u2019s best city!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m more familiar with the Point Loma\/Mission Beach area, so your mileage may vary. Here are some great places to visit:<\/p>\n<p>\n<b>Fun and free<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The BEACHES, particularly on Coronado Island. There are also Ocean Beach and Dog Beach on the west side of Point Loma, if you prefer a more hippy, small beach town feel. Very crowded, though. Coronado is much more spacious. If you want to try surfing, go to Tourmaline (Pacific Beach) in the early morning. WEAR A WETSUIT OR YOU WILL WISH YOU WERE DEAD. <\/li>\n<li>\nSunset Cliffs State Park (Point Loma) is a lovely place to take a walk in late afternoon, as it faces the sunset. Also, awesome tidepools.<\/p>\n<p><\/li>\n<li>Balboa Park\u2019s arboretum and rose gardens (Downtown)<\/li>\n<li>Old Town State Park, right near the intersection of I-5 and I-8 (also has the Mormon Battalion Visitor\u2019s Center) <\/li>\n<li>\nCoronado Island also has the historic Hotel Del Coronado, which was in<br \/>\nthe movie \u201cSome Like It Hot\u201d. It\u2019s too expensive to stay in, but lovely<br \/>\nto visit and look around. It\u2019s right on the beach! <\/li>\n<li>The San Diego Temple (La Jolla). Truly one of a kind, it sits like a spectacular vision right on I-5. Definitely see it at night! \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<b>Fun but requires $$$<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Balboa Park (Downtown) has a lot of GREAT museums, a replica of the Old Globe Theater, and one of the BEST ZOOS IN AMERICA. Visiting that zoo is a whole day in itself!<\/li>\n<li>Seaport Village (Downtown) is a cute shopping village on the water (fee for parking, they validate if you buy something)<\/li>\n<li>The Maritime Museum (Downtown) has several awesome boats you can tour, including the Star of India (which still sails!!!), a Russian nuclear sub, and the actual ship used in \u201cMaster &amp; Commander\u201d. There is also a flipping AIRCRAFT CARRIER down the street, for a separate fee.<\/li>\n<li>Sea World<\/li>\n<li>San Diego Safari Park, further inland in Escondido<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s something called Belmont Park (Mission Bay, west of Sea World) with an old-fashioned wooden roller coaster, but I\u2019ve never been there myself. <\/li>\n<li>Westfield Horton Plaza in the Downtown area, and Westfield Mission Valley in Mission Hills (eastbound on I-8). LOTS of shopping.<\/li>\n<li>Birch Aquarium (La Jolla): SEAHORSES<\/li>\n<li>\nCabrillo National Monument (Point Loma) has a great view of ALL of San<br \/>\nDiego, and the historic Point Loma lighthouse. You have to get on<br \/>\nCatalina Blvd. and drive south forever, right through the military base<br \/>\nuntil you get to the park entrance. A bit of a drive, and there is a<br \/>\nsmall park entrance fee, but it is WELL worth it.<\/p>\n<p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Good eats<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>POINT LOMA SEAFOOD (FOREVERRRRRR!!!!!!)<\/li>\n<li>A little Mexican restaurant called Nati\u2019s in the Ocean Beach neighborhood (my grandparents\u2019 favorite)<\/li>\n<li>Just about anything in Old Town <\/li>\n<li>Just about anything Mexican or seafood, really.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Tip<\/b>: Have a REALLY good map and review it before you start. Driving in San Diego is a hazardous experience. There are twisty roads and crazy turnoffs and you could find yourself circling around and around without a clue as to how you get out!<\/p>\n<p>Basically, San Diego is the best and I love it forever and I love you for going there. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Thank you! ! ! ! This is so helpful!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2018Cause I\u2019m a forgetful bunny, here is more, with actual links this time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pointlomaseafoods.com\/\">Point Loma Seafood<i>s<\/i><\/a>. (Or Seafood\u2019s? Their website uses both.) I\u2019ve been saying it wrong my whole life, apparently?<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/natisrestaurant.com\/\">Nati\u2019s<\/a><\/li>\n<li>If you LOVE soup, go eat at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.souplantation.com\/locations\/restaurant.aspx?store_id=2&amp;store_name=Point_Loma\">Souplantation<\/a>! It\u2019s the same chain as Sweet Tomatoes (there\u2019s one in Utah??? HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS???). It\u2019s right next door to a stationery shop called Just For The Halibut. LOL<\/li>\n<li>Check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.missionsandiego.org\/\">Mission San Diego de Alcal\u00e1<\/a>! For good and bad, the missions were such a big part of California history. And they\u2019re beautiful!<\/li>\n<li>For a fabulous supermarket experience, try <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vallartasupermarkets.com\/en\/weekly-specials\/region\/SanDiego\">Vallarta Supermarket<\/a>! SO MUCH GOOD FOOD<\/li>\n<li>I can\u2019t offer much info on hotels, since I always stayed with family. But I think the general rule is that things get cheaper the further inland you go.<\/li>\n<li>You can also try a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trolleytours.com\/san-diego\/\">Trolley Tour<\/a>! I\u2019ve never done it, but I\u2019ve heard it\u2019s fun!<\/li>\n<li>If you REALLY want to go crazy, take the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catalinaexpress.com\/\">ferry to Catalina<\/a>! Catalina is PARADISE. I haven\u2019t been there since I was a kid, but OH MY GOSH.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>FORGET DISNEYLAND. GO TO SAN DIEGO. DO IT.
