Psychiatrist appointments are so stressful, because I have less than ten minutes to tell the doctor everything about how I\u2019m doing and what med changes I might need. \u00a0It\u2019s more like putting on a presentation than like being cared for. \u00a0And every time I have to tell her\u00a0\u201cwhatever we\u2019re doing isn\u2019t working, I still feel awful,\u201d it\u2019s more like I\u2019m disappointing her than like she\u2019s disappointing me.<\/p>\n

(I don\u2019t have a bad doctor, by the way. \u00a0She\u2019s all right, she just has too many patients and not enough tools for treating them. Which I can empathize with.)<\/p>\n

And I\u2019m very verbal and relatively good at self-expression. \u00a0I can\u2019t even imagine how people who aren\u2019t get through this.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Okay, so how I deal with medical stuff is I write down a list of all the things they need to know, and put it in order, and then I hand it to them, and while they read I get a minute or two just to breathe and calm myself before they say very much. It\u2019s really helpful because you don\u2019t have to remember anything on the spot.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
